Parish and Neighbourhood Plans

The SODC Core Strategy means that Woodcote will have to accept more houses between now and 2027. With a Neighbourhood Plan the village can specify what sort of houses and where they go.

The recent application for Hilltop Field underlines the attractiveness of Woodcote to developers. At a time when there will be a presumption in favour of new development an adopted Neighbourhood Plan not only builds on the Parish Plan it considerably strengthens our ability to guide development in Woodcote in a way that reflects the priorities and needs expressed by the community.

More about Woodcote Village

At 500 feet (160 metres) above sea level, there are glorious far-reaching views from several parts of the village.

Originally a small community based on farming and the countryside, Woodcote is a thriving village with a good range of local amenities including a Post Office, mini-market, nursery/garden centre, popular New World bistro restaurant, two public houses, modern health centre (recently enlarged and upgraded) and excellent education facilities with two toddler playgroups, primary and secondary schools - the secondary school is rated in the OFSTED report of March 2009 as ‘providing an outstanding quality of education’ - and an excellent library.

Also, the Oratory School (the UK's only All Boys' Independent Catholic Senior Boarding and Day School), stands in extensive park-like grounds to the east of the main village. The Preparatory School for the Oratory is situated nearby at Crays Pond.

Near the centre of the village is the Parish Church, rebuilt in 1846 in a Norman style on the site of the original Norman structure; there are traces of original walling still surviving.

Activities appealing to young and old are based in the Village Hall and nearby Community Centre and are well publicised in the monthly village newspaper, the Woodcote Correspondent, circulated to all local residents.

Woodcote has good road communications with easy access for Reading, Henley, Oxford and the M40 and M4 networks.  For rail commuters there are mainline stations locally at Pangbourne and Goring on Thames, as well as Reading, all providing fast services up to London (Paddington).

Are you new to the village ?
A free ‘Welcome Pack’ compiled by Barbara Penniall on behalf of St Leonards Church is available to all newcomers to Woodcote. The pack, which is funded by Windmill Sales, contains a wide selection of useful information and is available from the library and the health centre. More details.
