In 2006, Woodcote resident Mary Hulbert received a book for her birthday.
The book told the stories of the men remembered on the war memorial of her home
parish and reading it inspired Mary to start the same work on the memorial here.
A letter was published in the Woodcote Correspondent and the Woodcote War Memorial
Project was born. A team of local residents are now researching the names and it
is hoped that a book will be published in 2009.
On the edge of the village green stands a granite memorial, erected in 1920 and paid for by public subscription, inscribed with the names of twenty three men who gave their lives during the first World War. At its foot a granite plaque, added later, inscribed with the names of the seven who fell in the second World War.
If you have more information about any of the men, the memorial or would like to join the team working on this project, please contact us. We are also keen to hear from anyone going near a place where one of the men is buried or remembered. You can see some of the pictures we already have by clicking the links below, but we still need pictures from sites in Baghdad, Belgium, Egypt, North East France, Flers (France), Greece, Italy (Naples, Salerno and Florence), and Poland. We would be happy to provide precise locations of cemeteries/memorials, with grave or memorial panel details.
The details of the servicemen on the memorial that we have obtained to date can be downloaded here - warmemorial.pdf (approx. 200 kilobytes).
The file is in pdf format and can be read using Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded free here if required.
