The District Council is the Local Planning Authority. It is also responsible for Building Control, housing benefit and housing allocations (through local housing associations), refuse collection and recycling, environmental protection, food hygiene inspection, health and safety enforcement (non-industrial), provision of sports and leisure facilities, bus passes and travel tokens and also car parks. The Council also provides grants to community organizations.

High Sheriff's Awards Ceremony

The High Sheriff's Awards Ceremony is to be held on Thursday, 1st March, 2012 at County Hall, Oxford.

As High Sheriff I am writing to ask you for nominations. The purpose of these awards is to give recognition to people in Oxfordshire who have contributed to the life and well-being of their local communities - the “unsung heroes”.

I am intending to present 12 awards, 3 from each of the following categories -
1. Care for the elderly
2. Bravery
3. Helpfulness in the neighbourhood
4. Long and/or meritorious service.
