Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club
Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club is part of Lions Clubs International which has just been recognised by the United Nations as one of the premier NGOs in the world.
We have a Dinner and business meeting once a month on the 2nd Monday of each month at the Caversham Heath Golf Club.
We fund raise in the villages of South Oxfordshire, from South Stoke to Whitchurch on Thames. Over 80% of our money is put back into the local community with some going to Lions Clubs International projects around the world and some the National Lions projects in UK and Ireland.
We have no upper age limit (21 is minimum) and membership of the club is open to men, women and couples.
In the Woodcote area, the main noticeable things we run are the annual Lions Santa Float, the annual 10k Run and we have helped organise the Woodcote Fun day. We organise an annual conker competition held at the Cross Lanes Fruit Farm open day and support both Langtree Primary and Secondary schools.

Play Conkers for Charity
The Annual Charity Conker Competition organised by Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club will be held at Cross Lanes Fruit Farm, Mapledurham, near Reading RG4 7UW during their Orchard Open Day on Sunday 12th October 2008, from 10.00am to 5.00pm.
Entrance to the Fruit Farm and car parking are free.
Enjoy preserving this great traditional and fun British pastime the way it should be played.
Safety
equipment will be available on loan free of charge to anyone who wishes to use it.
A voluntary contribution of £1 on the day will provide each competitor with one fresh conker complete with string.
All profits go to Lions charity funds and a special prize will be presented to the winner.
Competition rules:
- Only fresh conkers may be used, as will be provided by Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club.
- Players take alternate hits at their opponent's conker.
- The player whose conker is to be hit holds it with the string wrapped round one hand and suspends it at a height to suit his/her opponent. It must be kept still.
- The striker holds his/her conker in one hand and the end of his/her string with the other, then swings the conker to hit the opponent's conker.
- A miss by the striker entitles the striker to another shot.
- If the strings tangle the first player to call “strings” can claim an extra shot.
- Alternate blows are struck until one of the conkers is destroyed; that is until no part of it remains on the string. The player with the surviving conker is deemed the winner.

A Gift of table and chairs - April 2008
A local family are now able to sit and eat their meals together around the same table thanks to the donation of a dining table and four chairs donated by Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club this week.
The Lions Club were alerted by Social Services to the need by a family for a small foldable table and some chairs to fit into the limited space where they live. The Lions Club were pleased to be able to discretely respond immediately with the donation and delivery to the family of a gateleg dining table and four chairs.
Respecting the need to not reveal the identity and location of the family involved, photograph does show Lion Charles Slater and Liz Gibson loading the furniture at the point of despatch and ready for delivery. These Lions Club members and supporters are local people who are able and prepared to volunteer their time in this way to help those in need within the local community.
Big Easter Egg Draw for Lions Charities
Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club collected a total of £215 at the Easter weekend through the sale of £1 draw tickets to win 3 large chocolate Easter eggs. The eggs were put on display for tickets to be sold at the Sun pub at Whitchurch Hill, Caversham Heath Golf Club and at the Police Rehabilitation Centre, Flint House in Goring.
The photograph shows Mrs Chris Mott, Landlady at the Sun Inn handing the £90 cash raised in sales of tickets at Whitchurch Hill to Lion Brian Godley, Fund Raising. The winner of this egg was Mr Chris Quinton and family from Woodcote.
The sale of similar giant Easter eggs at Caversham Heath Golf Club and at Flint House raised a further £125 for Goring, Woodcote & District Lions Club charity projects. Funds are also raised by this local Lions Club using the ‘Great Weather Lottery’ and ‘Cottage Cakes for Charity’ which are sold at Sue Ryder Care Centre sales days in Nettlebed, and at many other local events throughout the year.
